LED Lighting Glossary

  • Accent Lighting – Used in many different ways to illuminate pictures, stairs, lavatories, insides of drawers, or any area that requires small amount of illumination.

  • Candlepower (Candela) – Basic unit of measuring luminous intensity from a light source in a given direction.

  • Cd/m2 – Candelas per square meter, measure of luminance (Metric unit of measure).

  • Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) – A description of the color appearance of a light source measured in Kelvins.

  • Diffuser – A device to redirect or scatter the light from a source.

  • Downwash Lighting – An indirect source that emits from behind avalance and gives general wash of light to the floor or lower portions of a wall.

  • Electroluminescence – the conversion of electrical energy to light energy.

  • Emergency Pathway Lighting – Used to mark safe pathways of emergency escape routes.

  • Footcandles (fc) – lumens per square foot, measure of illuminance (English until f measure).

  • Footlambert (fL) – Candelas per square foot, measure of luminance (English unit of measure).

  • Glare Shield Lighting – Designed to illuminate a control panel, in such a way that the amount of light and color of light cancels the ambient light.

  • Illuminance – the density of light striking a surface typeically measured in footcandles or lux.

  • Kelvin – unit of measure ofabsolute temperature. Measurement not rated in degress.

  • LED (Light Emitting Diode) – A semiconductor device that emits light through a phenomenon called electroluminescence.

  • Luminance – Photometric brightness of a surface, typically measured in footlamberts or cd/m^2.

  • Luminaire – A complete lighting fixture consisting of lamps, housing, optics and wiring.

  • Lux – Lumens per squaremeter, measure of illuminance (Metric unit of measure).

  • Opaqure – No transmission of light.

  • Recessed Lighting – Describes the type of lighting systems which are placed within a ceiling or wall. The cover of the lighting unit is designed to be fluxh against the wall or ceiling.

  • Transparent – Transmission of light through a material, such that objects or images can be seen as if there were no intervening material.

  • Translucent – Transmitting light but causing sufficient diffusion to eliminate perception of distinct images.

  • Upwasy Lighting – Term given to the indirect lighting that emits from behind a valance and gives a general wash of light to the ceiling and upper portions of a wall.

  • Wash – Expression describing the ay light spreads over a surface.
